If you’re a believer that a pizza is a pizza is a pizza is a pizza, you’ve got it all wrong. Some slices seriously outdo others. One of the best places in Vancouver to get a perfect pie is Dunbar’s Brick Oven Pizzeria, where a real, fire-stoked brick pizza oven churns out fresh, delicious, authentic Italian pizzas.
Mama Mia!
You’ll think you’ve died and gone to pizza heaven — or, at least, Italy. Brick Oven pizzas start off with a fresh, homemade crust, made from a special blend of unbleached white and whole wheat flours. Standard toppings are tasty tomato sauce and lotzza mozza. Choose one of the restaurant’s Italian-sounding specials: Marinara with clams, olives and fresh garlic; Pescatore with ham, shrimp and onions; La Spinaccia with fresh spinach, onions and Feta cheese; or Alla Salsiccia with Italian sausage, onions, garlic and fresh basil. Or create your own masterpiece — hot banana peppers and all!
Ristorante Rustico
While Brick Oven’s interior hasn’t changed much in the decades it has occupied the Dunbar Street space, its current owners have added a few of their own touches to make the place feel a little more — how you say — italiano. Red checkered cloths cover the tables, and soft Italian-inspired records play in the background. And, of course, feel free to lean up against the brass railing in the back and watch the pizza-man prepare your pie, sliding it on his wooden paddle in and out of the fiery brick oven.
