If you start yoga with Bikram's you'll know what you are going to get - a class that will make you sweat like never before. All studios are franchised from the California headquarters; they use the same program and method and provide lots of information on their websites.
In every 90-minute lesson, the Bikram-qualified instructors take both beginners and experienced clients through 26 set postures in a standard sequence, with a short rest period between. As in most yoga studios, beginners are urged to adjust their practice to the limits of their bodies.
This method emphasises the health and fitness aspect of yoga, particularly through the high constant temperature of 105-110 degrees and 60 percent humidity in the studio. There's lots of sweat! One instructor estimates that clients burn between 350-600 calories per class, although the exact amount depends on many factors.
Bikram's yoga is claimed to help balance the emotions. One website recommends practice no less than ten times a month, and an ideal of every day for three months.
You'll be advised to consult a doctor beforehand if there is any doubt about health. As in most yoga studios, clients must sign a waiver of responsibility for injury, and are screened for medical conditions which might make practice inadvisable.
Vancouver has six Bikram's studios. Most offer four to six sessions weekdays, and slightly fewer on weekends. Payment options range from a $10 first-lesson charge and $17 drop-in to monthly and block-lesson payments. Prices vary slightly, the West Van studio being predictably more expensive.
What to Bring
If you do not have a yoga mat, rent them for $1 per class. Bring a bottle of water, one or two towels (one to cover your mat; a smaller one to wipe your sweat). Wear light, breathable clothes - the less the better!
