Language and Technique
Berlitz Language Centres have been around for over 140 years. With 12 centres across Canada, Berlitz specializes in teaching language students in a lively and interactive manner. The Berlitz Language Centres employ the Berlitz method, which involves complete language immersion in the classroom with an instructor that only speaks in the target language. Pointing to objects and acting out verbs, students are encouraged to interact as much as possible. The Berlitz method concentrates on the discovery process instead of rote learning. Students are encouraged to learn how to speak the language first; afterwards, reading and writing instruction is given.
Classroom Immersion
At the Vancouver centre, English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, and Cantonese are all taught. Instruction in any language can be requested. In addition, Berlitz tailors its language training for different types of people: corporate, government, international student and personal interest.
Catering to Language Learning Needs
The Berlitz Language Centre in Vancouver teaches approximately 3,000 students per year, and approximately three quarters of those students are from abroad. Summer at the school is the busiest time. Group classes are for English instruction only, while all the other languages are taught individually or in duos in evening classes. Business people who have just relocated to Canada thanks to a job can also take classes at Berlitz and they may find the cross-cultural training valuable, in addition to language learning.
