It's Huge and It's Covered
Looming over the western horizon in downtown Vancouver, BC Place is a massive, white, vaulted structure that is perhaps best known as the world's largest air-supported dome. It was constructed in 1983 using enough concrete to pour a sidewalk from Vancouver, BC, to Tacoma, Washington. The four-hectare roof is made up of two fibreglass-woven fabric layers only 0.85 millimetres thick. The light, but stronger-than-steel layers are separated by 1.5 metres of space, inside which 16 fans blow air to inflate the dome. During winter, hot air is pumped to melt the snow at the rate of 15 millimetres per hour.
Olympic Role
BC Place is capable of seating 55,000 spectators, making it one of the largest covered stadiums in the owrld. Its design and size will allow for amazing displays of lighting, projection and special effects technologies during the Opening and Closing Ceremonies for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games and the Opening Ceremony of the 2010 Paralympic Games. As well, each night throughout both Olympic Games BC Place will host medal ceremonies during their Victory Celebrations.
A Versatile Venue
BC Place is where Queen Elizabeth II invited all nations to attend Vancouver's Expo '86, and since then it has become a major part of Vancouver's recreational and cultural identity. From July to November, the dome hosts BC Lions football games. It has also staged concerts for international superstars such as Madonna, the Rolling Stones and U2. It is a renowned trade show and conference venue, and is the chosen location for such events as the Pacific International Auto Show, the BC Home and Garden Show, the Vancouver International RV Show, Spring and Fall Gift Shows, and the Boat Show.
