A Family Specialty
Although the sushi is always a popular option here, what really sells well are the bento boxes and combos. A wide variety of choices are available, including chicken teriyaki, chicken katsu, sashimi, rolls and, of course, salad, rice and miso soup. They have an all day bento box special, as well. As for combos, choose three items from the menu and add miso soup and rice. Portions are generous- it’s impossible to leave still hungry.

The Price is Right
It pays to travel just east past Boundary Road and out of Vancouver for good deals on food. Only five blocks into Burnaby, Akira has prices to make the big city weep. Locals are seen eating here repeatedly throughout the month and those from neighbouring communities justify the drive because of the money saved. And for those who live nearby, there’s always the option of taking out your order and enjoying it in the quiet of your own home.

One Room is Enough
The unassuming exterior of Akira Sushi doesn’t fool the crowds who eat here regularly. One room completes the restaurant, filled with simple furniture and the buzz of happy diners. This small space adds to its familiarity, keeping customers coming back, yet does make things a bit congested at peak times (during the lunch and dinner hours). Often seen are both single customers eating by themselves with a book or magazine, as well as groups of friends chatting about life over noodles and sashimi.
